10 Things...

Of course, the first thing that comes to mind if asked to finish this statement is
LOVE this movie!
But that's not what I'm focusing on today. In fact, I'm doing the opposite.

10 Things I Love About Myself

Thanks to Stephanie of Hooah and Hiccups for this idea. I have hit a low point emotionally and, therefore, physically, right now. (Read more about that here.) So this seemed like a perfect exercise for this snow day, stuck at my parents' house with too much nothing to do.

1. My passion for my work I spend a lot of time thinking about ways I can improve professionally. My summers are usually filled with professional development I love what I do and am so proud of my students when I see them progressing and getting better. It makes me realize that I really have chosen the right profession. As is typical for me, I spend more time thinking of how things are going wrong, but in the grand scheme of things, I am successful and need to recognize that more.

2.  My generosity I love to give gifts. I am always buying things for other people because it makes me so happy to make others happy. I usually purchase my first Christmas gift in February. I like to buy things when I see something that fits someone; it bothers me to no end to have to go to the store to get a gift because I have to, because it's three days before someone's birthday and I need a gift. Buy now, be happy later. (Check out my post about Christmas gifts.)

3. My hair Getting back out into the dating world via OK Cupid has made me realize that I'm not a hideous troll. (Follow my OK Cupid Twitter account for my online dating stories!) And I complain about my hair, but it really is beautiful. Whether I straighten it or let the natural waves go wild, I love knowing that it's healthy and sometimes crazy. It's fun to play around with, and the possibilities are endless.

4. My honesty Sometimes this is a fault, but I have learned (thanks to my mother) that there's no point in beating around the bush. I'm not mean or cruel, but I tell it like it is. (I joke sometimes that my mouth is so big because I keep having to shove my foot farther and farther in!)

5. My figure Believe it or not, as much as I hate my body sometimes, I do love the fact that I'm an hourglass. I like having a waist that's smaller than my hips and my boobs, I won't lie! (Refraining from making any self-deprecating remarks here...and that's hard!!) And I like having hips and boobs! So suck on that, voices of doubt.

6. My cleanliness I don't like dirty dishes in the sink, I make my bed every morning and I vacuum on a very regular basis. Sure, things get cluttered every now and then, and I'm not the most organized person in the world. But I'm not a slob, I'm not a pig. (I have a feeling I'll be much cleaner and more organized when I'm in a smaller space. I'm kind of like a gas-I fill whatever space I'm given!) A clean space makes such a difference with regards to my mental well-being.

7. My independence I'm excited to explore this more now that I'm about to be single for the first time in 13 years. I've spent the past eight years supporting two people and I'm ready to only have to worry about myself. I can't wait to get a new car and a new, smaller place to live and know that the only other being in my care is Boo. And I take good care of him.

Who wouldn't want to give him the best life ever?
8. My convictions My love of animals extends far beyond the adorable fuzz face pictured above. I feel so whole knowing that my decision to go vegan was for myself, the animals and the planet. My care for the environment shows in the choices I make on a daily basis: at the grocery store, in my care, at home. I want every woman to be free to make a choice that is best for her and her body. There are many issues about which I am passionate, and I do everything I can every day to live by the standards I set for myself and encourage others to do the same.

9. My eyes "I could not go by your profile without letting you know that you are very very attractive." "Hi, you are so beautiful." "Just wanted to say that you are ridiculously gorgeous, beautiful eyes and smile." OK, I'll take it! Once again, my foray into the online dating world has underscored an aspect of my physical appearance that people find attractive.  I love the color of my eyes; I grew up with blue eyes but when I was about 20 they changed to green, and I'm not complaining. Now that I'm better at eye make-up, I think I do a good job enhancing them. And cute glasses help!

10. My strength It's ironic that I am writing this in a period of weakness and a serious low-point. But when I think back to where I was 18 months ago, I've come so far. I don't think I'd be nearly as strong right now if I hadn't done some serious soul-searching and self-loving.  It would be so hard to get up every morning and function like a normal person. While I will scream if one more person says to me, "You're strong, you'll get through this rough time," they are right. I am going to come out of this a stronger person with more self-love and kindness. This list is a start. Betches love themselves first.

What do you love about yourself?
